New Arizona Development Bans Residents From Bringing Cars
Culdesac is the first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US. Culdesac starts from a simple insight: the way people move defines the way they live, and the way people move is changing fast. The first Culdesac car-free neighborhood launches in 2020 in Tempe, Arizona, and the company looks to eventually expand into other cities such as Dallas and Denver. Instead of cars, residents in the Culdesac community use scooters, bikes, and ride-sharing. The Culdesac community will house over 1,000 residents. Instead of parking lots, Culdesac makes room for acres of greenspace, friendly courtyards, and shops right at residents’ doorsteps. The community also offers same-day grocery delivery and an on-site light rail stop to make it a breeze to get downtown for work. The Culdesac team has a passion for urban planning, transportation, sustainability, public art, technology, and design. They believe now's the time for a new kind of neighborhood that can pave the way to a happier life and healthier planet.
